Wish or Goal? A Simple Question That Changes Your Fashion Business
Let me ask you something that most fashion entrepreneurs never slow down long enough to think about:
Are you running your business on wishes or on goals?
It sounds like a small difference, but it’s often the line between:
- I hope it works out this season
and
- I know what I’m doing and why I’m doing it
I’m asking you this as a friend who genuinely wants to see your brand grow, not just survive. In a volatile and uncertain economy, this question is essential. Do you agree?
What’s a wish?
A wish sounds like this:
- I wish buyers would finally notice us
- I wish we could get into bigger stores
- I wish sales would pick up this year
- I hope it's going to work (trade show investment, recruitment of a new team member ...)
There’s nothing wrong with wishing. It usually means you care.
But here’s the problem:
A wish doesn’t tell you what to do next. It doesn’t give you numbers, deadlines, or a clear focus. It stays in your head and in your heart, but not in your calendar or your budget.
What’s a goal?
A goal is a wish that you’ve decided to get specific and serious about.
It sounds more like this:
- We will book 6 new wholesale accounts this season
- We will increase our online conversion rate from 1% to 2.5% in the next 90 days
- We will build a list of 100 qualified buyers before the next trade show
A good goal is:
- Clear
- Measurable
- Time-bound
- Owned by someone (you or a team member)
When you have goals like this, your day changes.
You stop asking, What should I do today? and start asking, What will move me closer to that goal today?
Why this matters so much in fashion?
Fashion is emotional, creative, and seasonal. It’s easy to get swept away by:
- the next collection
- the next show
- the next big opportunity or shiny object
Without clear goals, you can work incredibly hard and still feel like you’re running in circles:
- Big investment, little return
- Great pieces, but no consistent buyers
- Lots of activity, not much progress
You deserve better than that. Your brand deserves better than that.
Try this: Turn one wish into one real goal
Let’s make this practical.
1. Write down one big wish you have right now for your brand.
Example: I wish we had more reliable sales after the trade show.
2. Turn it into a clear goal.
Example: Within 6 months, 40% of our trade show contacts will place at least one order.
3. Break it into 3–5 simple actions.
For example:
- Send a personal follow-up email to every serious prospect within 48 hours of meeting - Have this email template prepared even before you attend the show!
- Schedule 2–3 check-in calls per week with key buyers
- Prepare a simple reorder offer for existing/ new clients (if required as we do not want you to give your profitability away too easily
- Track every contact and follow-up in one spreadsheet or CRM
Now you’re no longer hoping for the best or more sales. You’re building them.
A gentle reality check
If most of your energy goes into:
- Designing
- Producing
- Posting on social media
- Reacting to "urgent" things
but you don’t have 1–3 clear goals driving your decisions, you are likely building on wishes.
That doesn’t make you wrong. It just means you’ve been doing what almost everyone in fashion does.
The difference between brands that stay stuck and brands that grow is rarely talent. It’s clarity, courage, and simple, consistent actions toward real goals.
Let’s bring this home!
Today, I invite you to pause for just a few minutes and ask yourself:
Where am I still wishing… instead of deciding?
Pick one area of your business:
- Sales
- Production
- Cash flow
- Buyers/agents
- Marketing
Then write:
- One wish you have
- One goal you’re willing to commit to.
That’s it. One small shift. From I hope to I will.
It’s a quiet but powerful way to respect your work, your team, and your future.
And if you want help turning your wishes into clear, concrete goals with real numbers and timelines, that’s exactly what we do together at Global Fashion Management.
